What is the Reference Mark?
The reference mark (※) is a typographic symbol used primarily in East Asian writing systems, particularly in Korean and Japanese documents.
In Korea: It’s commonly called “dangujang pyosi” (billiard hall sign) because it resembles the sign often displayed on billiard hall signboards—the X shape looks like two pool cues, and the four dots resemble billiard balls.
In Japan: It’s called “komejirushi” (米印), meaning “rice mark,” because it resembles the Chinese character 米 (rice). You can often see this symbol on rice shop signs in Japan.
In English: It’s officially called the “reference mark” and is used to indicate notes or references.
Usage
The reference mark is mainly used in Korea and Japan for annotations and notes.
Annotations: Used to add notes or reference information within the main text.
Emphasis and warnings: Carries a stronger sense of caution or warning compared to regular annotations.
Difference from Western usage: In Western documents, the asterisk (*) is typically used for the same purpose, with footnotes placed at the bottom of the page. The reference mark (※) is primarily used in Korean and Japanese documents.
