What is a Middle Dot?

The middle dot (·), also called an interpunct or middot, is a punctuation mark positioned vertically in the middle of the line. It’s commonly used in several ways:

List separator: Used to separate items in a list that are equal or closely related. For example, “apples · oranges · bananas” or “New York · Los Angeles · Chicago.”

Name separator: In some languages and contexts, the middle dot separates parts of a name or compound words.

Math and logic: Used as a multiplication symbol or to indicate relationships between elements.

How to Type Middle Dot

Windows

Method 1: Alt Code

  1. Make sure Num Lock is turned on.
  2. Hold down the Alt key and type 0183 on the numeric keypad.
